By 2025, the Belgian government will close seven ageing nuclear reactors.
Doel and Tihange plants house the reactors, which have long been controversial. In neighbouring countries, they have been shut down repeatedly for safety checks.
Government ministers held overnight talks and debated for years before reaching a compromise.
On Thursday, a press conference confirmed the plan in principle.
Reuters reports that closures will begin in 2022 and both plants will be decommissioned by 2045.
Engie’s reactors have been operating since the 1970s, and have long been a source of concern in the region.
Several cities across nearby borders complained about plans to use reactors beyond their 40-year design life in 2015.
