An annual assessment published Thursday by Belgium’s coordinating body for threat analysis (OCAM) found there were 218 terrorist and extremist threats last year.
Reports indicate that in 2021, the overall threat level remained medium throughout the year. One-third of threats were considered medium-level, and over 50 percent were considered low-level.
A very serious and imminent threat was identified. In May and June of last year, an armed far-right extremist former military man, Jürgen Conings, made threats against Belgian politicians and against virologist Marc Van Ranst.
As part of the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of the Interior, OCAM works with the National Crisis Center and the Public Prosecutor.
In the report, one-third of the threats were associated with jihadist ideology, and one in ten were associated with right-wing extremism.
