With abandoned factories and derelict buildings, Charleroi in Belgium certainly looks like the world’s ugliest city.
Located south of Brussels, the city used to be a major industrial hub that specialized in coal mining. However, after World War II, the market declined sharply, leaving its factories abandoned.
De Volkskrant branded it “the ugliest city in the universe” in 2009 due to its appearance.
Despite this, its residents aren’t quite as disappointed as one might expect.
In his tour of the city, Nicolas Buissart, a resident and artist, said he loved the grit and charm of the city.
He said, “If you are considered ugly, you might as well be the ugliest.”
