The narrow gate opposite Ostend’s abandoned swimming pool is almost never noticed.
Elie Laine, a French landscape architect, designed a walled garden for King Léopold II in 1903. Currently, it is an overgrown site with stone vases and four cast iron statues that are copies of originals in Versailles’ gardens.
There is, however, a further mystery hidden behind the white wall in the middle of the garden. The site of a pool was converted into a small Japanese garden in 2001. During the summer, it is open on weekends.
