Belgium’s largest electricity consumer, SNCB, has reached out to the government for assistance as a result of the energy crisis.
According to the Flemish newspaper De Standard, SNCB’s energy bills will increase significantly, similar to that of most Belgian households.
It is estimated that the company’s overall energy bill (for electricity, gas, and oil) will be €100 million higher this year than in 2020.
Consequently, SNCB has taken measures to ease the blow to its annual budget as a result of these inflated prices, according to company spokesperson Dimitri Temmerman.
Therefore, drivers are being taught to anticipate accelerations and decelerations in order to drive more ‘economically’. As a result, there should be fewer erratic stops and starts during the ride.
The additional costs resulting from the energy crisis will not be covered by this alone, Temmerman cautions. Consequently, the company is “reviewing with the government how to respond to this situation.”
